Lakhimpur Kheri Violence Case: Allahabad court refuses to grant bail to Ashish Mishra

Lakhimpur Kheri Violence Case: It is known that the incident of violence against farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri in UP has created a sensation across the country. The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench on Tuesday refused to grant bail to Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra in the case. Allahabad High Court granted bail to Ashish Mishra in February this year. However, when the family of the farmers filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the bail of the accused, a bench led by Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Suryakant and Justice Hima Kohli canceled Ashish Mishra’s bail.

As Ashish Mishra filed a petition for bail again, everyone thought that bail would come with certain conditions, but it did not happen that way. Senior advocate Gopal Chaturvedi appeared on behalf of Ashish Mishra, Kamaljit Rakhda on behalf of the victims and AAG Vinod Shahi on behalf of the state government. Earlier, the court had reserved its decision on the issue on July 15. But on Tuesday, the High Court canceled Ashish Mishra’s bail plea and sent him back to jail. Ashish Mishra should remain in jail for now. Ashish Mishra’s lawyers tried their best to get him bail but the court did not succeed in his arguments.

The incident took place on October 3, 2021 when a group of farmers were protesting against the Agrarian Acts at Tikonia in Lakhimpur Kheri. During Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s visit, his son Ashish Mishra rammed his car into the protesting farmers. Four farmers were killed in this incident. Four more lost their lives in the ensuing clashes. Later, the police registered a case and started investigating the incident. Union Minister’s son Ashish Mishra is the prime accused. However, it is known that due to pressure from the farmers and the opposition, the Center has ordered a SIT investigation into the incident.

The UP government has reconstituted a SIT comprising three IPS officers in the same case. A total of 8 people lost their lives in that incident. As the video of the incident also went viral, farmers and various parties across the country expressed their anger. The opposition has demanded immediate removal of Ajay Mishra, who is the Union Minister. The Supreme Court, which heard this case, expressed extreme intolerance against the UP government.
