Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, the prime accused in the Lakhimpur violence case in Uttar Pradesh, has surrendered in court. Ashish Mishra has been widely accused of killing eight people, including four others, in a subsequent riot in which a car rammed into a group of farmers who were peacefully fighting for agricultural laws in Lakhimpur. Ashish Mishra was arrested by the police.
The Allahabad High Court granted bail in the case registered against Ashish Mishra. However, the Supreme Court last week quashed the bail. The victims had alleged in the petition that if Ashish Mishra was out there was a possibility of tampering with the evidence in the case. The apex court held that the victims in the case did not get a chance to have their arguments heard in the Allahabad High Court. The Allahabad court did not consider the matter on behalf of the victims. Ashish Mishra surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Lakhimpur on Sunday. The apex court had directed the UP government to sit under the leadership of a retired judge in the Lakhimpur case.
