President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the presidency with the popular movement. Agitators occupied the presidential building and his office. Thousands of protestors stayed there saying that they would not leave the presidential building until Gotabaya resigned.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced his resignation on Wednesday, July 13. The Prime Minister’s Office said on Monday that the matter has been officially conveyed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickrama Singhe. Earlier Gotabaya informed Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana about his resignation while Prime Minister Ranil Wickrama Singh has already resigned from his post. He announced his resignation to form the government under the leadership of Akhil Paksha. The people there are accusing the Rajapaksa brothers of corruption in Sri Lanka. A movement has been going on in Sri Lanka since March demanding the resignation of the president and prime minister, saying that the economic crisis in Sri Lanka is due to their corruption.

In May, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister. But President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that Sasemira should resign. Ranil Wickramasinghe was newly appointed as the Prime Minister. People have bent the necks of Gotabaya with the recent public movement. There are already reports that Gotabaya Rajapaksa has left the country. Meanwhile, all the parties have expressed their willingness to form the government under the leadership of all parties. After Gotabaya’s resignation, Sri Lanka’s President and Prime Minister are being discussed.

Sri Lanka has never faced such economic problems since its independence from Britain in 1948. The government’s ill-advised decisions and debt together led to a severe financial crisis. The prices of essential commodities have increased tremendously. Along with this, there is a situation of non-availability of petrol and diesel in the country. People are queuing in front of the gas stations for days but they are unable to get petrol. Due to this, the intolerance of the people increased and led to a violent movement.
