Sri Lanka is reeling with worries. The protests that started on Saturday took a serious form. Agitators stormed the President’s building demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya. As the situation got out of hand, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the official residence. Along with this, Ranil Wickramasinghe, who took over as Prime Minister two months ago, also resigned. Unsettled by this, the crowd set fire to the Prime Minister’s private residence. Videos of protesters occupying the President’s Palace are currently going viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s former star cricketers are supporting the public movement. Former star cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya participated in the protests. Criticizing ‘Go Gota’, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa demanded his resignation. Jayasuriya said that he will always stand by Sri Lanka.. Soon the people will win. Along with this, another former star batsman Kumar Sangakkara also supported the public movement. Concerned people posted the video on Twitter. He commented that this is for our future. Former star cricketer Mahela Jayawardene tweeted that Prajashakti with the hashtag ‘Go Gota Home’.

There are concerns across Sri Lanka. Two police officers and 30 people have been injured in the protests so far. In the protests that started yesterday, the Galle Cricket Stadium, where the Australia-Sri Lanka Test match was being held, was besieged. They protested to attract the attention of the world. Agitation programs have been going on in Sri Lanka since last March. Sri Lanka has never seen a financial crisis like this since independence in 1948. The prices of essential commodities have increased tremendously. There was a situation of standing in queues for days for petrol and diesel. Sri Lanka has no foreign exchange reserves to buy at least petrol. The people turned against the government saying that the reason for all this was the corruption of the Gotabaya family. As a result, Mahinda Rajapaksa, who previously served as Prime Minister, resigned from his post. Recently there are reports that the President has left the country.
