Local media reported that protesters who besieged the home of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday seized large wads of currency from the building in the wake of Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis. Still the protesters did not leave the building. According to a Sri Lankan newspaper, the Daily Mirror, the recovered money has reportedly been handed over to security agencies. Several dramatic videos have been doing the rounds on social media since Saturday’s riot. It is known that when thousands of protestors attacked the official residence of the President in Colombo, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled. Demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, they entered the president’s home, tore down security cordons placed by the police, bathed in the swimming pool, and surrounded his kitchen and home.
Protesters found a large cache of cash at the president’s residence. A video of counting cash has come out. Now that video is going viral. It seems that the seized 17.8 million currency notes were handed over to the security personnel. The police announced that they will know the facts only after the investigation. Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva asked all citizens to extend their support to the armed forces and police to restore peace in the country. He made these comments in a special statement along with the commanders of the three forces.

Several journalists and security forces were also attacked. The police used water cannons to stop the angry protesters. Wickremesinghe, who was appointed Prime Minister in May, announced that he would resign from his post for the safety of all citizens. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also agreed to resign from his post on Wednesday.
