Srilanka Crisis: It is known that Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the interim president after Parliament Speaker Yapa Abeywardena accepted Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation. Ranil focused on helping the people to quell the anger of the Sri Lankan protesters. Ranil Wickramasinghe has decided to implement an emergency relief program to provide fuel, gas and essential food items to the people who are suffering due to financial crisis. He took this decision in the context of discussions with ministers and members of parliament on July 16. Besides, it has been decided to use the additional money in the relief budget to be presented in August for this purpose.

Acting President suggested to speed up implementation of food security programme. Special attention has been paid to proper provision of fuel and fertilizers. During the discussion, businessmen made plans to prepare the necessary environment to run their businesses without any hindrance. Wickramasinghe said during the discussion that the plan presented by the peaceful protesters was recognized as a good plan. The acting president said he would inform the activists of the measures being taken to fight corruption. Earlier, on Friday, Sri Lanka’s main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa announced that he would contest the presidential election.

Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a special statement saying that as Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned from his position, Parliament will meet next week to elect a new President, as per the Constitution. The island nation is currently facing its worst economic crisis since independence. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has issued an interim order barring former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa from leaving the country until July 28 without the permission of the court. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as interim president on Friday after Parliament Speaker Abeywardana accepted Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation. After arriving in Singapore, Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially vacated the presidency and submitted his resignation letter on Thursday.
