Srilanka Crisis: Please cultivate rice .. Government begging farmers

The island of Sri Lanka is mired in a severe food and financial crisis. There are no foreign exchange reserves in the national treasury. This makes it impossible to pay for goods imported from other countries. However, the government has taken steps to prevent a further food crisis in the country. The government is urging farmers to cultivate rice. Experts warn that the food crisis is already severe.

Sri Lanka is facing the worst food and economic crisis in seven decades. The small country with a population of 2.2 crore is plagued with many problems. Chilligavva does not even have the money to pay for key imports like food, fuel and medicine. “We want all farmers to enter their fields and cultivate rice in the next five to ten days,” Agriculture Minister Amaraweera said on Tuesday. Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has already warned that the food crisis will intensify in the near future. However, it is estimated that $ 600 million will be needed to import the fertilizer.

“We are in talks with India to procure 65,000 tonnes of fertilizer from India and we are seeking seven more countries,” Amaraweera said. He, however, could not say when these would reach Sri Lanka. Currently the currency in Sri Lanka is depreciating by 50 percent. Food inflation rose to 46 percent.
