The two planes crashed in mid-air despite a slight negligence. There were 275 people on board the Sri Lankan plane at the time. There were 250 people on the British Airways flight.

However, the air traffic controller in Ankara, Turkey suggested that the Sri Lankan aircraft be flown from 33,000 feet to 35,000 feet, but the pilots of SriLankan Airlines refused. The British Airways aircraft was spotted approaching at an altitude of 35,000 feet and informed Air Traffic Control. The big accident was averted when the pilots refused to allow Ankara air traffic to reach 35,000 feet incorrectly twice. A few minutes later air traffic responded urgently and instructed the Sri Lankan aircraft to continue at 33,000 feet. The two planes flew at an altitude of 2,000 feet.
