Japanese Encephalitis: Japanese Encephalitis is on the rise in Assam despite some improvement in flood situation. Since April this year, 35 people have lost their lives due to this disease. Encephalitis is a deadly mosquito-borne disease. Due to this disease, swelling occurs in the nerve cells in the brain, causing obstructions in their functioning. Symptoms such as headache, fever, vomiting, loss of consciousness, amnesia, and convulsions are usually seen in those infected with meningitis.
A total of 226 cases of Japanese encephalitis have been detected so far in July. The disease claimed three more lives in Assam in the last 24 hours, the National Health Mission said. With this, the total number of people who have died due to this disease has reached 35. A total of 24 new cases were reported today. Out of 24 new cases, 4 each in Nagaon and Biswanath district, 3 in Jorhat district, one each in Dhemaji, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Baksa and Chirang districts.
The first case of Japanese encephalitis was recorded in Japan in 1871. Symptoms of meningitis are usually fever and headache. Later they get infected and become ill. In children, gastrointestinal pain and vomiting may be the main initial symptoms. Symptoms of severe disease include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, seizures, paralysis, and eventually death. The mortality rate is up to 30 percent in those with symptoms. Of those who survive, 20 percent to 30 percent suffer permanent intellectual, behavioral, or neurological sequelae, such as paralysis, recurrent seizures, and inability to speak.

Safe, effective vaccines are available to prevent the disease. The World Health Organization recommends that control activities be included in all areas of public health priority where the disease is identified, in addition to strengthening surveillance and reporting mechanisms.
