Digital News: Digital news within the scope of the law.. New law coming before the Parliament!

Currently there is no limit to digital media in the country. The central government is gearing up to regulate digital media. It seems that the government is thinking of introducing the law amendment bill in this regard in the parliament sessions starting from next week. If the government approves this bill, it will be empowered to take legal action against those who misuse digital media. If it is proved that wrong information has been given, the registration of the website may be cancelled, and fine may be imposed.

This new bill will become a law immediately if it is approved by the Parliament. As a result, digital media will also come under the purview of the law. To this extent, it is reported that the Center is giving final touches to the Registration of Press and Periodicals Bill. If this bill becomes a law, digital news, which is not under the scope of government regulation, will now come under the scope of the Media Registration Act.

And digital news publishers should apply for registration within 90 days of these rules coming into force. They have to register with the Registrar General of Press. But this bill needs approval from the Prime Minister’s Office. In 2019, the Center’s attempt to regulate digital media under the new IT Act led to a heated controversy. At that time, the government took a step back due to the large-scale opposition that threatened the freedom of digital media. The Government of India brought the Registration of Press and Periodicals Bill to replace the Press and Registration of Books during the British rule. It regulates news magazines and printing presses.
