Punishments in Islamic countries such as Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia are more severe than in other countries. There are executions for minor offenses. A British man has recently been sentenced to death in Iraq. But it is not surprising to hear of his crime. Jim Fitton is a retired British geologist. He visited an archeological site in the Eridu region of Iraq with a German scientist. They also collected 12 ancient stones, some pots and jars from the archeological site.
However, Iraqi authorities arrested Walton, a German scientist, at the Baghdad airport on March 20, on suspicion of smuggling their archeological remains. They were arraigned in Iraqi court on Sunday. Geologists told the court that they did not collect the stones with criminal intent. They told the judge that they did not know the laws of Iraq and that was why they had collected the stones. They said they did this because there were no warning boards at the archeological site that stones should not be collected. However, the court sentenced him to death because the crime was so serious in Iraq. His family is urging the UK government to release Jim Fitton. To this end, a petition was filed online and the collection of signatures was started. So far, they have collected 1.24 lakh signatures in support of Fitton.
