At least 17 people have been killed in a lightning strike in Bihar state. A maximum of six people were killed in a lightning strike in Bhagalpur district. Three were killed in Vaishali district, two in Banka district, two in Khagaria district and one each in Munger, Katihar, Madhepura and Saharsa districts. Heavy rains followed by thunder and lightning have killed at least 17 people since Saturday night. The state of Bihar also lost a large number of people to lightning last year.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed deep grief over the death of 17 people in a lightning strike in the state. The Chief Minister has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to each family who died in the lightning strike. He urged the people to be on full alert in adverse weather conditions and follow the instructions issued by the Disaster Management Department to prevent lightning strikes. He advised to be safe at home at such time.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Sunday that southwest monsoon has spread over parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Ganges, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. Extreme levels of thunder and lightning are expected across northern, central and eastern India in the next 2-3 days. It is expected to rain in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal in the next few days.
