Bypoll Results: Manik Saha wins by a narrow margin over BJP in Tripura

The BJP atmosphere continued in Tripura. The BJP has won three of the four assembly seats in the state, while the Congress has won one. Chief Minister and BJP candidate Manik Saha, who is contesting from Bardowali (urban) constituency, won by a margin of 6,104 votes over Congress candidate Ashish Kumar Saha, the Election Commission said. With this victory he seems to have qualified to continue as Chief Minister. In the by-elections, the BJP won in Bardowali, Zubarajnagar and Surma seats. In Agartala constituency, Congress candidate Sudeep Roy Burman won with 3,163 votes.

It is learned that Manik Saha was sworn in as Tripura Chief Minister last month. With the resignation of the then Chief Minister Biplavdev, he took over as the CM. Winning as an MLA is required by law to continue in that position. According to the rules, he will have to resign from his Rajya Sabha membership. BJP leaders and activists are celebrating Manik’s victory. Bardowali (urban) constituency legislator Ashish Kumar Saha resigned from the BJP and joined the Congress in February. A by-election was held for this position.

The by-election for these four constituencies was held on June 23. 22 candidates stood in the ring. Nearly 78 percent exercised their right to vote. Counting began at 8 a.m. Sunday.
