The new president Ranil will continue in the post till November 2024.

Out of 225 parliamentarians, 223 voted to elect a new president. There were four invalid votes. Two other candidates did not vote. As a result, Wickramasinghe was elected as the 8th president of the island nation of Sri Lanka by getting 134 votes out of 219 votes. Sri Lankan Podujana Peramuna Party Parliamentarian Dallas Alahapperuma and National People’s Power leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake got 82 votes and 3 votes respectively.

It is known that Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned from the post of president due to the protests in the country in the wake of severe financial crisis in Sri Lanka. It is known that Ranil Vikrama Singhe, who is currently the Prime Minister, has taken over as the interim president. In this order, the announcement for the post of president was released on Tuesday. But this is the first time in the history of Sri Lanka since 1978 that the President has been directly elected by the Parliament for the last 44 years.
