Boys and girls schools in Kerala are going to be a thing of the past. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed the state government to convert all educational institutions in the state into mixed schools with boys and girls from the next academic year. It has issued directives to convert all educational institutions into co-educational schools from the academic year 2023-24.
The panel, which investigated the petition filed by a person, directed the Principal Secretary (General Education), Directors of Public Education and the State Council for Education, Research and Training of the state to implement co-education. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed to submit a report to the Commission within 90 days on the implementation of co-education. It has been ordered to close special schools for girls only and boys only in the state. In addition to the implementation of the co-education system, it has been stated in the directives that the physical conditions, toilets and basic facilities in the schools should be improved and the parents should be made aware of the co-education system. Kerala has a total of 280 girls’ schools and 164 boys’ schools in all government and aided sections. All these will become co-education schools from next year.
